Self confidence and self esteem are an important part of our day-to-day life. With most of the population suffering from low confidence and self esteem, there can be no doubt that most of the people who have low confidence and esteem miss out on things in life. And those people know if they increase their confidence and esteem, they can increase their self worth, become a better person and live to their full potential. However, another thing most of those people will agree on – is that they don’t actually know the difference between their confidence and esteem.
So What is Self Esteem?
At a basic level, self esteem can be defined as having a feeling of pride in yourself. It is so much more than this however. It is how you evaluate your own self worth. We evaluate our self worth by using both emotions, for example; the feeling of triumph versus despair; and our built in beliefs, ‘I am worthwhile’, ‘I am worthless’ etc. We apply self esteem differently to specific parts of us, via our ability to do a specific task or job and also globally, through how we see us as a whole (I believe I am a good person/I believe I am a useless person etc).
Self Confidence is Different – How?
The main difference between self confidence and self esteem is that self confidence is having a belief in your ability and future performance. Having a high level of self esteem means you are more likely to see yourself as someone who is worthy of happiness and success. This, in turn, means you will have the confidence to push yourself to try harder and to aim for whatever goals you want to set out to try to achieve.
What Are The Benefits of Self Confidence and Self Esteem?
The benefits of having a good level or self confidence and esteem are endless! They give you the belief and faith, in both yourself and your ability, to achieve whatever you set your sights on. They give you the courage to be you; to accept you as the perfect, imperfect person that you are! To see your strengths and weaknesses, as part of you; but not as limits for you.
And that is where the secret to gaining self confidence and self esteem is really hidden. That secret is to truly love and believe in yourself. To fully believe in your skills, to appreciate and be proud of yourself and to love who you are – warts and all.
